ADA-Complaint Mother Removed from Franklin (TN) School Board Meeting Over CRT Comments

Jun 21, 2021Franklin, TNSubmitted by Staff
Summary

Williamson County (Tennessee) parent Robin Steenman and other Moms for Liberty members were repeatedly gaveled down and threatened with removal at 2021 Williamson County Schools board meetings when raising objections to the Wit & Wisdom curriculum on First Amendment grounds; police were positioned at meetings and one speaker was escorted out.

Full report

During public comment across summer and fall 2021 board meetings, Steenman and other parents attempted to read passages from Wit & Wisdom materials they argued were age-inappropriate. Board chairs cut microphones, invoked decorum rules against 'inflammatory' speech, and had at least one speaker escorted from chambers by Williamson County Sheriff's deputies. No arrests. The state Department of Education later found the curriculum partially out of compliance with a new state law and the district revised materials. No federal lawsuit was filed but the ACLU-TN and FIRE both flagged decorum enforcement concerns.
